Heat pumps in Scotland - an introduction

What is a heat pump?

A heat pump is a modern, energy-efficient way to heat your home and hot water by using heat from the air outside. Even in colder weather, there's still usable energy in the air, which the system captures and turns to useable heat for your heating system. It's the same technology as fridge (only in reverse) so it's tried and tested but has only recently become a popular choice in the UK despite them being common in other parts of Europe, most notably Scandinavia, even with their very cold winters.

Unlike traditional boilers, heat pumps run for longer at lower temperatures, providing a steady, comfortable heat throughout your home. When properly designed, they can be highly efficient and work well with radiators or underfloor heating.

At Edinburgh Heating, we focus on getting the design right from the start. Every property is different, so we carry out detailed surveys and specify systems that are properly matched to your home—ensuring reliable performance, good efficiency, and a smooth transition from your existing heating system.

 What funding is available?

In Scotland, there is strong financial support available to help with the cost of installing a heat pump. Through Home Energy Scotland, homeowners can access a grant along with an optional interest-free loan, significantly reducing the upfront investment.

The process involves an application, a technical assessment of your home, and approval before installation can begin. While this can seem a little daunting at first, we guide you through what's required and ensure the system we design meets the necessary criteria.

At Edinburgh Heating, we're experienced in working alongside the grant process and can help you understand what's available, what your home is likely to qualify for, and how to move forward with confidence. If you're considering a heat pump, we'd be happy to talk you through your options and what the next steps would look like for your home.

What work is involved?

Installing a heat pump is more involved than a straightforward boiler replacement, as the system needs to be carefully designed to suit your home. This typically includes a full survey, assessing insulation levels, radiator sizes, and how your current system operates.

The installation itself usually involves fitting the outdoor unit, upgrading or adjusting pipework, and in some cases replacing or resizing radiators to suit the lower running temperatures. We'll also ensure your hot water system is correctly set up, which may include installing or upgrading a cylinder.

While every property is different, we aim to make the process as smooth and well-managed as possible, keeping disruption to a minimum and ensuring everything is set up for reliable, efficient performance from day one.
